TIPS Purchasing System

May 19, 2021

Is your organization a government or non-profit entity? TIPS may be the best resource you’ve never heard of! The Interlocal Purchasing System is a pre-verified purchasing system, also called a buying group, that public and non-profit organizations can use to find vendors without going through the bid process. Unlike other buying groups that focus on private companies, TIPS does not require a membership fee.

But What’s a Buying Group?

We thought you’d never ask! A buying group is designed to find contractors or vendors for large projects for your business or organization, like roofing projects or building projects. It can be daunting and time-consuming to hunt down all those contractors yourself, especially if you have an abundance of options. Joining a buying group allows you to focus on your own organization while your membership with the group accounts for their services. TIPS is specially focused on non-profits, offering unique services and requiring no membership fees.

How Does TIPS Work?

In 2002, TIPS began as a small regional cooperative in Texas. Originally intended to serve local schools in northeast Texas, the purchasing group expanded to serve organizations across the nation.

TIPS finds purchasing contracts for vendors representing services from construction to electric to catering, technology, office supplies, and beyond. Vendors submit proposals, undergo community review, and if they score highly enough on the TIPS rubric, receive a contract. Organizations can then choose from an array of these vetted purchasing contracts directly, no bidding war required.

What Are the Benefits?

TIPS provides the following benefits for its members, allowing these organizations to focus their energy and resources on the people they serve:

  • Access to competitively procured contracts with quality vendors
  • Savings of time and financial resources necessary to fulfill bid requirements
  • Assistance with purchasing process by qualified TIPS staff
  • Access to pricing based on a “national” high-profile contract

As a non-profit, you forgo the membership fee for the TIPS buying group and gain help with finding vendors, securing contracts, saving money, and overall completing large projects more easily.
